Bienvenue du Maire de
Winnipeg On behalf of the City of Winnipeg, I would like to take this opportunity to offer my warmest greetings and a special welcome to all attending the Canadian Society for Chemistry’s 2007 Canadian Chemistry Conference and Exhibition at the Winnipeg Convention Centre, May 26-30, 2007. The 90th Canadian Chemistry Conference and Exhibition, “Global Innovations”, promises to raise awareness and address the latest in chemical research and education. Bringing together participants from across Canada and around the world, this landmark conference will provide a superb opportunity for conversation, collaboration, and innovation. For those of you visiting Winnipeg, I hope you will make time to enjoy some of the vast array of arts, dining, shopping, and other entertainment Winnipeg offers. There is truly something for everyone. On behalf of my esteemed City Council colleagues and all the citizens of Winnipeg, welcome to our great city. I would like to wish you all the best for an enjoyable conference. Warm regards, Sam Katz Mayor of Winnipeg Bienvenue du président
du congrès On behalf of the Conference Organizing Committee and the Scientific Program Committee, it is my distinct pleasure to welcome you to Winnipeg and to the Canadian Society for Chemistry (CSC)’s 90th Canadian Chemistry Conference and Exhibition. I extend a particularly warm welcome to our student participants and to the many international delegates who have traveled a considerable distance to be with us, as well as to all our industry, government, and academic partners. It is my hope that, in addition to contributing to the many symposia, you will also have an opportunity to explore all that Winnipeg has to offer. The 2007 CSC conference provides unprecedented opportunities for participants to expand their scientific horizons. The scientific program is broadly based, as has been the custom, and also offers outstanding content uniquely characterized by its host universities in Manitoba, the cultural heart of Canada. In fact, all three of the province’s universities—Brandon University, The University of Manitoba, and The University of Winnipeg—have collaborated on this exciting conference. Symposia will be held in all traditional areas of chemistry as well as in macromolecular science and engineering, chemical education, and environmental chemistry. Professor Barry M. Trost of Stanford University joins the impressive list of past distinguished speakers that includes CSC 2005 conference lecturers Gregory Petsko (Brandeis University) and Tito Scaiano (University of Ottawa), and CSC 2006 conference plenary lecturer Professor Sir Harold Kroto, FRS, Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1996. Addressing the conference theme of “Global Innovation,” Professor Trost’s plenary lecture is titled, “On Inventing New Reactions for Atom Economy,” and promises to be a dynamic catalyst for new ideas, critical thinking, and open discourse on issues of global significance affecting our local and global communities and economies. In addition to the wide variety of technical presentations, the conference exhibition presents all participants with the opportunity to see the latest developments in instrument design and service capabilities. Be sure to take time out of your busy schedule to learn more about these new directions in chemistry. I extend my sincere gratitude to all members of the Conference Organizing Committee including the dedicated CIC National Office staff, the Vice-Chair, Professor Norm Hunter, the Scientific Program Committee chaired by Professor Hélène Perreault, and the symposia organizers and chairs, for mounting such an extensive and exciting technical program. Welcome to Winnipeg and to the 90th Canadian Chemistry Conference and Exhibition! Sincerely, Alaa S. Abd-El-Aziz, FCIC Conference Chair Bienvenue du Président, Société canadienne de chimie On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Society for Chemistry (CSC) and our National Office staff, it gives me tremendous pleasure to welcome you to the 90th Canadian Chemistry Conference and Exhibition (CSC2007) in Winnipeg, Manitoba. As in the past, we will be joined by distinguished Canadian and international chemists as well as many younger chemists—the future of our profession. Global Innovations being the theme for this conference is particularly appropriate as chemistry and the chemical sciences are increasingly being turned to in addressing global environmental, health, and energy challenges. Our plenary lecture, titled “On Inventing New Reactions for Atom Economy,” is being provided by Barry M. Trost of Stanford University. Trost's interests in finding “chemists’ enzymes” to improve reaction efficiency are particularly appropriate given the broad challenges we face in improving the effectiveness and sustainability of chemistry and chemical processes through improved efficiency in use of raw materials, energy, and minimizing waste production. This promises to be an enlightening and thought-provoking meeting. CSC2007 is a major focus for the CSC—creating an opportunity for students, senior researchers, and policy makers to interact and share their findings with both old and new colleagues from across Canada and around the globe. It is also an opportunity to recognize and honour our colleagues for their excellence in research, teaching, and contributions to the profession of chemistry in Canada. The spirit of collaboration is alive and well in Winnipeg with the Conference Organizing Committee coming together from all three Manitoba universities. I extend my sincere thanks to Alaa Abd-El-Aziz, FCIC, and Norm Hunter, FCIC, and their dedicated and talented team of program and conference volunteers. I would also like to take the opportunity to thank our many sponsors and exhibitors for their support and participation in this event—be sure to visit them at the Exhibition. Have a great conference! Dave Schwass, MCIC President, Canadian Society for Chemistry
